COSMETIC BONDING
Tooth colored composite resin material is placed your natural teeth to improve your smile. It is called "bonding" because the composite resin is chemically bonded to your natural tooth. This method typically does not remove a lot of existing tooth structure and usually does not require anesthesia. However, if the bonding is done on teeth that are decayed or fractured beyond the enamel, it will require local anesthesia.
Cosmetic Bonding is best for teeth that are mildly chipped, broken, cracked, stained, or have small spaces between them. It is a relatively inexpensive way to make minor repairs and cosmetically improve a smile without major down-time and repeated appointments. If you are interested in whitening your teeth, it is recommended that you consider teeth bleaching prior to cosmetic bonding to get the best shade match.
Cosmetic Bonding is not as strong as your natural teeth and are prone to chipping and stains, requiring frequent replacements. Those who clench their jaws (and refuse to wear a nightguard), poor oral hygiene, nail biters, ice chewers, and who like to use their teeth as tools should take careful consideration before choosing cosmetic bonding; or any other cosmetic procedure.
VENEERS
Veneers are thin, tooth colored shells that are chemically bonded to the front surface of teeth to improve the appearance of mildly chipped, broken, cracked, stained, slightly crowded, or teeth that have small spaces. Most veneers include 6-8 teeth to create a symmetrical smile. Veneers are usually made from porcelain or composite, require more removal of tooth structure and are typically created in an outside laboratory.
Porcelain veneers are usually very esthetic, do not stain easily, and can last for a very long time with a person who has great oral hygiene and no parafunctional habits (clenching, grinding, nail biters, ice chewers, those who use their teeth as tools, etc). However, they are expensive and can easily break or debond as result of poor personal habits.
Clear Aligners
Clear Aligners, are orthodontic devices that are transparent, plastic trays that are used to move teeth in a better position. There are many brands of clear aligners on the market, but Invisalign is the pioneer of aligners and the most commonly used.
Clear Aligners are more esthetic, comfortable, and easier to maintain than traditional metal braces. However, there are some cases that are more suitable for traditional metal braces and treatment with an orthodontic specialist.
First you will come in for a consultation to determine if you are a good candidate. We will assess your occlusion and facial symmetry. If you are a good candidate, we will take photographs and impressions of your mouth to send to the laboratory for analysis and custom trays (If you are not a good candidate for treatment at our office; it doesn't necessarily mean that you are not a candidate for Invisalign, it simply means that you would be better served at an orthodontic specialist).
Once your case is sent to the laboratory, we will be working with techinicans to develop a custom treatment for the desired outcome. Once we approve the final design, the laboratory will return your custom trays and we will schedule an appointment for the fitting of your trays.
Sometimes trays will require tiny "attachments" to help stabilize the tray and to provide optimal tooth movement. These attachments are tooth colored, painless, and easy to apply.
Your case will include sets of aligners, that you will wear for a designated time, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next set, your teeth will move- little by little until they have straightened to their final position. We will schedule appointments every 6 weeks to monitor your progress. When your treatment is finished, you will be given a set of retainers to wear to prevent relapse.
